China Registered 2.2M New Energy Vehicles in H1 2022

According to data released by China’s Ministry of Public Security on August 12, by the end of June 2022, the number of motor vehicles in the country had reached 406 million units, including 310 million cars and 10.01 million new energy vehicles (NEVs). NEVs accounted for 3.23% of the total number of cars, an increase of 27.80% compared to that of the end of 2021. Among them, the number of pure electric vehicles was 8.104 million, accounting for 80.93% of the NEVs.

In addition, 2.209 million NEVs were newly registered in China during the first half of 2022, a year-on-year increase of 100.26%, a record high. The number of newly registered NEVs accounted for 19.90% overall.

Divided by region, in the first half of 2022, there were 81 cities with more than 1 million cars and 20 cities with more than 3 million cars. Among them, Beijing has more than 6 million cars, while Chengdu and Chongqing have more than 5 million cars.

According to the “Brief Introduction of Automobile Industry’s Production and Sales in July 2022” released by the CAAM on August 11, China’s production and sales of NEVs in July were 617,000 and 593,000 units respectively, both increasing by 1.2 times year-on-year.

In addition, the production and sales of pure electric vehicles were 472,000 and 457,000 units, which doubled and increased by 1.1 times year-on-year respectively. The production and sales of plug-in hybrid EVs were 144,000 and 135,000, up 1.8 and 1.7 times respectively year-on-year. Fuel cell vehicles’ production and sales were 292 and 245 units respectively, up 4.6 times and 13.4% year-on-year.

In July, the loading capacity of Chinese power batteries was 24.2 GWh, up 114.2% year-on-year and down 10.5% quarter-on-quarter. Specifically, the loading capacity of ternary batteries was 9.8 GWh, accounting for 40.7% of the total loading capacity, an increase of 80.4% year-on-year and a decrease of 15.0% quarter-on-quarter. Meanwhile, the loading capacity of lithium iron phosphate battery was 14.3 GWh, accounting for 59.3%, up 147.2% year-on-year and down 7.0% quarter-on-quarter.
