Details on OPPO’s New Foldable Phone Exposed

Prominent Chinese tech industry blogger with Weibo nickname “Digital Chat Station” posted on July 4 that OPPO is currently developing two new foldable phones. One has the code name “Dragonfly,” and has not yet been officially named.

According to the blogger, the screen of this new device will be smaller, with a vertical inward folding function, a refresh rate of 120Hz, a new hinge structure, and its main focus is to be light and thin.

He also revealed that OPPO is still developing a straight display model, and in the second half of this year, it will launch a series of high-performance flagship smartphone models equipped with MediaTek and Qualcomm chips.

OPPO launched its first folding screen model, the OPPO Find N, in December last year, starting from 7,699 yuan ($1,151). The device is equipped with a Snapdragon 888 processing platform, a built-in 4500mAh battery, a 7.1-inch foldable inner screen, resolution of 1792 × 1920, and a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The outer screen is 5.49 inches and the resolution is 1972 × 988. The maximum brightness of both screens is 800nit, while the local peak brightness is 1000nit.

At present, many manufacturers have launched vertical folding flagship models, such as the Huawei P50 Pocket, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 and Motorola Blade 5G.

OPPO’s new smartphone will compete with these models. It is likely to adopt Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 + flagship processor, which is superior to other vertical folding models.

The Snapdragon 8+ is powered by a TSMC 4nm chip, making a huge new breakthrough in performance and energy efficiency. It reduces CPU power consumption by 33% and GPU power consumption by 30% compared to the previous generation. The overall power consumption of the platform has dropped by about 15% compared to Snapdragon 8.

In addition, the vertical foldable phones of Huawei, Samsung and Motorola are equipped with a secondary screen that can display time and information. Therefore, it is possible that the OPPO vertical foldable phone will use a similar scheme.

It is expected that this new OPPO foldable phone will debut in the second half of the year. The weight is estimated to be under 200g, as “light and thin” are its main focus.
