OPPO and OnePlus Develop 1.5K Flexible Display Smartphone

On August 24, Chinese tech industry blogger with Weibo username “Digital Chat Station” broke the news that OPPO and OnePlus will launch 1.5K flexible screen smartphone models, and that their displays will support high-frequency dimming. Realme’s new smartphone will support 2160Hz pulse-width modulation (PWM) dimming, while OPPO and OnePlus will likely adopt eye protection screens.

The blogger also said on August 20 that major smartphone manufacturers will use 1.5K high-frequency dimming domestic flexible screens on a large scale, mainly for high-end and sub-flagship models, and that many new models are planned from the end of this year to next year.

On August 12, Xiaomi released the Redmi K50 Extreme Edition. This model adopts a 1.5K OLED straight screen, jointly developed by Xiaomi, Tianma Microelectronics and TCL. Starting from the whole link including screen material, screen structure, screen technology to mass production, the three parties adopt a new drill-like arrangement, new luminous materials, new double-layer circuit design and new intelligent voltage control system.

The 1.5K straight screen of the Redmi K50 Extreme Edition smartphone has 446PPi (pixels per inch), and it is Redmi’s first 12-bit screen with 68.7 billion colors. It also supports 1920Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, hardware-level low blue light, and it has obtained SGS low visual fatigue certification.

Technically, the pixel resolution of the Redmi K50 Extreme Edition’s screen is between FHD (full high definition) and 2K (ultra-high definition), so it is dubbed “1.5K,” which is exclusively customized by Redmi, developed alongside many Chinese industrial companies and realized mass production.

Like the 2K screen, for the user experience, such as visual effects, this 1.5K screen also is capable of ultra-high definition, with an equivalent resolution of about 0.8. At the same time, it has low power consumption, can achieve a relatively balanced energy efficiency ratio, and takes into account the requirements of high image quality and low power consumption. It is therefore considered a “brand-new screen.” William Lu, Partner and Senior Vice President of Xiaomi Group, also said that the 1.5K screen of the Redmi K50 Extreme Edition can achieve power consumption close to that of the 1080P screen, which is also the result of hardware and software innovation and upgrades.
