Tesla Announces New Battery Solution at Battery Day, 16% Increase in Range

Tesla announced a new battery solution for its electric cars at the “Battery Day” event on Wednesday, the biggest highlight of which is the further significant reduction in battery energy density and cost.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company will produce batteries independently in the future. The biggest highlight of this new plan is that Tesla has incorporated batteries into the entire vehicle structure of electric vehicles, which further reduces battery costs while increasing energy density.

Musk said the new solution will remove the connecting parts that used to connect to the battery pack. The new battery without connecting parts is called “4680”, which is 80 mm high and 46 mm in diameter. It will provide 5 times the energy of the previous battery, and the density and cruising range will be increased by 16%.

The company revealed that the new battery is currently close to the “trial production” stage. At present, the batteries for Tesla’s electric vehicles are mainly supplied by third parties. The 2170 batteries currently produced by Panasonic are mainly produced in Tesla’s Gigafactory project in Nevada for the Model 3 and Model Y.

At the Battery Day event, Tesla revealed that it will release an electric vehicle priced at only $25,000, which will impose great pressure on traditional car manufacturers as Tesla will be able to produce lower-priced electric vehicles with the further drop in battery costs.

Also at the event, Tesla also announced a new Model S Plaid that emphasizes performance, which can reach 1,100 horsepower, 0-60 mph acceleration in less than 2 seconds, and a top speed of 200mph. The model will be officially launched in 2021.
