Vivo Jointly Developing Portrait Lens With Zeiss, Unveils New Self-Developed Chip

On the afternoon of October 24, Chinese smartphone manufacturer vivo held an imaging strategy conference. From the release of XShot, the world’s first smartphone with an F/1.8 super aperture and optical anti-shake mode, to the X70 Pro and X80 series equipped with its self-developed V1 imaging chip, vivo is continuing to make great efforts to achieve innovation in optics, computing power and algorithm technology.

Vivo unveiled a new self-developed imaging chip, although the name has not yet been announced. Its architecture has been upgraded from traditional ISP to AI-ISP, which can realize high-precision AI computing with low delays and high energy efficiency. With the improvement of chip architecture, this new self-developed chip has a data throughput rate of 1.3 trillion bit/s and a peak energy efficiency ratio of 16.3 Tops/w, and the noise reduction effect of night scene videos is improved by 20% compared with the previous generation.

At the press conference, vivo announced that it is jointly developing a new 50mm portrait lens with Zeiss, a German manufacturer of optical systems and optoelectronics. In 2020, it formally established a global imaging strategic partnership with Zeiss. In the future, on the basis of cooperation in optical imaging technology, the two sides will further formulate optical quality standards for mobile images, explore and realize the miniaturization of lens modules, and aim to create more exciting mobile imaging experiences.

At the event, vivo revealed several recent self-developed technological achievements related to imaging, such as the “optical super-division algorithm” which can effectively improve telephoto imaging quality, as well as its brand-new ultra-clear image quality engine. Combined with the telephoto lens of the next generation products, it can improve the shooting resolution by 64% in focal length above 5X.

Vivo also revealed “VCS Bionic Spectroscopy Technology,” which can better control image noise performance and color restoration. With its blessing, compared with the previous generation IMX866 sensor, the signal-to-noise ratio of the next generation sensor equipped with VCS technology will increase by 20%, and the color restoration will increase by 15%.

In addition, vivo demonstrated a “super portrait imaging system.” This is a complete set of portrait photography solutions that use a self-developed algorithm. It first comprehends portrait information, then beautifies portrait details at a micron level, finally creating a unique visual atmosphere.

The brand-new night mode based on self-developed AI algorithms, and a better lens sensor can improve the imaging sensitivity by up to 100%. The ISO can support up to 102,400, which makes long-exposure starry sky shooting with a tripod or stabilizer possible by just holding a smartphone.

These new technologies are likely to be adopted by the upcoming vivo X90 series smartphones, and the new models are worth looking forward to.
