XPeng Motors Subsidiary Announces Interactive VR Patent

A subsidiary of Chinese new energy vehicle firm XPeng Motors announced on Wednesday a new patent entitled “Virtual Reality-Based Scene Display System, Method and Vehicle.”

The published summary shows that the patented system includes vehicle information acquisition equipment, processors, VR/AR display equipment and interactive equipment, and the system can acquire images around the vehicle, conduct modeling to obtain a three-dimensional virtual scene, and respond to the interactive control instructions input by the user to synthesize dynamic effects with the three-dimensional virtual scene to obtain the target virtual scene screen.

The announcement also states that the application will enable users to view real-time 3D virtual scenes with dynamic effects in the process of riding the car, in combination with interactive operations, thereby raising the interest and riding experience of passengers.

XPeng Motors has maintained a high proportion of R&D investment. As of March 31, 2021, R&D personnel of Xpeng Motors accounted for nearly 40% of all staff. The R&D investment was 1.051 billion yuan ($156.4 million) in 2018, 2.07 billion yuan in 2019 and 1.726 billion yuan in 2020.

The huge R&D investment has brought in a steady stream of technical achievements. In terms of the number of patents, as of the first half of 2021, the cumulative number of patent applications by XPeng Motors reached 2,567, of which the number of intelligence-related patent applications reached 887. At the functional level, the XPILOT automatic driving assistance system and Xmart OS in-car intelligent system of XPeng Motors have received positive comments from consumers.

Zhihuiya data suggest XPeng Motors mainly focuses on patented automated driving in technical fields such as automatic driving, electronic equipment, data processing, automatic parking, location information, vehicle control and remote driving.
